Surfer DNA
A surfer is more than a person on a surfboard. The board is an extension of one's self, the means by which a surfer makes a connection to the water, both physically and spiritually.
I was able to capture this unique emotional relationship with a visual allegory, incorporating fins as a physical extension of the body. We assembled a remarkable mix of 39 creatives - actors, designers, photographers, filmmakers, chefs - a global community united through surf.
I wanted them to feel that connection with the board and the water. During the shoot, fins were attached to each subject with Velcro straps, their neck, arms, back, legs, hands, etc. In post-production only those straps were removed, and subsequently the fins seamlessly emerge from the subjects’ bodies portraying the striking embodiment of the deep, inherent tie to the ocean felt by each surfer.
